Hands At Work

This is a Christian non-profit organization working in vulnerable communities across sub-Saharan Africa where HIV/AIDS, poverty and the numbers of orphans are the highest and support structures are very low.  Hands At Work helps the local church in those communities to effectively care for the orphaned and vulnerable. The ministry is to all those in need, regardless of race, class or religion.

Hasbury Community Church is pleased to partner with ‘Hands’ and we specifically support a Community in Malakota, Zambia.   We provide financial support to enable children in the community receive the three basic requirements of nutritious food, education and health care.  A team from Hasbury Community Church visited the community in 2017 and again in 2019 to experience the work first hand.

Richard Chalklen

Richard Chalklen

Also known as ‘Chalky’, Richard Chalklen is one of those Bible teachers who has his students’ undivided attention from his opening sentence.   He is a lover of puns and a play on words.  Richard’s messages are inevitably punctuated with alliterations and clever one-liners.  He has an unmistakable passion for God coupled with an enthusiasm to communicate.

With his wife, Denise, Chalky began ministry at OM’s LUKE in Halesowen.  They spent a couple of years training OM trainees for outreach and involving them in church partnership. When they began to realize how great the needs were in their own nation, they transferred to Boschkop in South Africa.  Here they were involved in OM’s missions training for the next eight years. Chalky’s specialty was coaching trainees in techniques for effective preaching.

Denise has always played a key role as a mother-figure.  She counsels and shows hospitality to over 100 students each year.  In addition, she teaches methods for ministering to kids. Recently, the Chalklens transferred to the Church Partnership Department, relocating from OM’s training base to Johannesburg.  Chalky is now working more directly with churches teaching books of the Bible, running seminars on Bible study methods and challenging young people for world missions.

Denise has teamed up with her two daughters to teach local ladies and their girls how to enjoy and make the most of their mother-daughter relationship. They have at times had up to a hundred women participating in their seminars.

After fifteen years in missions training, Chalky and Denise are still in full swing.  They are seeing more recruits than ever sign up for missions as a result of the challenge they present.
